Changing themes in WordPress

A WordPress Theme is a collection of files that control how your site looks and functions without modifying its underlying structure.

When you switch to a new theme all of your Pages and Posts will remain intact, while the site takes on a new look and additional functionality, depending on the theme.

Switching the Active Theme

Switching themes is easy and can be done in a matter of minutes. However, there are some things you’ll want to be aware of beforehand that will make for a smoother transition. For more details read this post: 15 Things You MUST DO Before Changing WordPress Themes

To switch themes for your site:

  • Log in to the WordPress Administration Panels.
  • Select the Appearance panel, then Themes.
  • From the Available Themes section, click on the Theme title (or Theme screenshot) for the Theme you wish to activate.
  • A preview of the Theme will be shown.
  • To activate the Theme click the Activate “Theme Name” link in the top right.

Your selection should immediately become active.

Adding a New Theme:

Before making the switch you will need to pick a theme and have it properly installed. There are several ways to do this and the one you use will depend on your hosting service. You can find more information on how to do this at the WordPress Codex.
